Increased demand and competitive fares yield strong winter break travel numbers at Saint John Airport!

JUNE 03, 2013

Saint John, NB - Offering competitive prices for all-inclusive vacations to the tropical, widely popular locales of Cuba, Mexico and Dominican Republic, Sunwing Vacations and the Saint John Airport are pleased to report on a successful winter break travel season.

"We've seen about double the traffic on our spring break Sunwing Vacations flights over last year," says David Allen, CEO of the Saint John Airport. "This can be attributed to the recent addition of the Dominican Republic to Sunwing's destinations and quite simply, the competitive fares offered by the company. People don't need to shop around for the best price and top destinations - they can get it here at the Saint John Airport."

Often, smaller international airports compete on price with larger airports. More than ever, passengers are seeking a good deal, even if that means significantly more travel time to and from those larger airports, but Sunwing Vacations and the Saint John Airport offer the right price points, and direct flights, right here at home.
"Competition for the best flight deals is no longer local, or regional," explains Sunwing Vacations' Director of Atlantic Canada, Bob Sime. "In New Brunswick, we're also competing with Maine's international airports. But people in this region are choosing to fly with Sunwing out of the Saint John Airport because we offer great deals and direct flights to prime all-inclusive resorts. And it's incredibly convenient."

The Saint John Airport has Sunwing Vacations' largest program in Atlantic Canada, outside of Halifax. This can be attributed to local demand and the longstanding partnership between the airport and Sunwing Vacations.
"We launched our 2014 travel program with the Saint John Airport a few weeks ago," says Sime. "This is the earliest we have ever released an upcoming travel program, but people in this region are booking for 2014 already. The price is right and the demand is high, especially for group travel, like weddings and reunions."

Sunwing Vacations joined the Saint John airport in 2007. Sunwing Vacations packages can be booked through local area travel agents or through the website, Sunwing.ca.

Webinar on June 12 - Finding labour market information to help address skills and human resource needs

Attracting and retaining skilled workers in a tightening labour market is a major concern for many employers. Labour market information (LMI) can help them address that concern.  For businesses looking to expand or adjust to market changes, LMI is valuable to making business and location decisions.

Employers are especially interested in the labour market information for their community and want to understand the availability of workers, the current market conditions and where to find workers with specific skills. LMI can support all those needs and assist with human resource planning. Unfortunately, many employers have difficulties finding the LMI they need to support their decision-making.

This webinar will address these challenges and needs and will help you access data that will allow you to find the skilled workers your business needs. Experts from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada will take you on a step-by-step tour of the LMI resources available on WorkingInCanada.gc.ca and JobBank.gc.ca. Presenters will give you an overview of what data exists and where it comes from, known gaps and work currently underway to improve LMI and its dissemination. They will also show you how to use the tools available online and answer any questions you may have.

We hope you will join us for this informative session.

Homeport Study Awarded to Dillon Consulting

May 7, 2013

Saint John (NB) - Port Saint John is celebrating 25 years in the cruise business. Now, they’re looking to the future.
The Department of Tourism for New Brunswick and Port Saint John are partnering on a feasibility study to examine the possibility of making Saint John a homeport for cruise ships.
Potentially, Saint John could become the beginning and end of a passenger’s cruise journey.
“Saint John is the urban center point to the natural attractions of our world-class Bay of Fundy. Having an established cruise industry here at the Port, and both air and hotel options located in this city, makes taking the cruise offering here to the next level a logical progression,” noted Hon. Trevor Holder, Minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. “As the study moves forward, we are excited to learn both the outcome and how we can all move the project forward together.”

The Department of Tourism is funding the study. Port Saint John took the lead on the project, sending out a request for proposals earlier this year. Dillon Consulting, a Canadian firm, was selected with their $49,500 proposal.

Dillon will bring in expertise from their offices across Canada, specifically John Spalding of Vancouver.
“I can’t think of a better announcement to kick off our 25thanniversary year. Homeport status could be huge for the tourism industry in Saint John and the province overall. Visitors coming here would be travelling in by air, staying in hotels, shopping and exploring the area. It’s another opportunity to showcase this province and boost revenue in the community,” stated Jim Quinn, President & CEO of Port Saint John.
The cruise industry is a major source of revenue and cultural vitality for New Brunswick. Cruise passengers, crew members and lines have a $30 million economic impact on the region.
