Geocaching to Commemorate the March of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment

In February and March 1813, New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot marched up the St. John River to Upper Canada in support of the military efforts underway as part of the War of 1812. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of this March, the Friends of New Brunswick 104th will be placing a series of geocaches along the route of this historic March. Geocaches will also be installed at locations of outposts and military installations occupied by the 104th Regiment. These containers will be installed over the next several months, and will be activated during the 200th Anniversary activities in each community, currently being organized under the leadership of the St. John River Society.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting activity that is fast growing in popularity. Participants use a handheld GPS device or a Smartphone application to navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find a hidden container at that location. It is a great family activity that requires minimum investment. It can be done anytime of the year and in groups or individually. It is also an emerging tourism and vacation activity. In Fredericton alone, there are over 300 Geocachers!

“With my military background and my passion for Geocaching, it was a natural fit to have folks follow the path of their ancestors and go to places they were in the winter of 1813”, said Randall Haslett, Friends of New Brunswick’s 104th. “When I discovered that there was a series in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland to honour Captain John Smith, I just knew we had to do this one. The Geocoin that we have available is amazing.”

The plan is to install special containers that replicate the backpacks worn by soldiers of the 104th Regiment . The Friends of New Brunswick 104th will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the caches. Liaison has been made with the St. John River Society, the Fredericton Region Museum, as well as other individuals with expert knowledge of the event for historical data and authenticity of locations.

As is common practice with this kind of series, a special limited edition of 200 Geocoins will be offered as incentive to visit these sites. These Geocoins are treasured memorabilia by Geocachers will certainly keep them. Other recipients may choose to register them using a special unique tracking code and then watch vicariously as the Geocoin travels around the world from cache to cache.

It is anticipated that this series will draw visitors from all around to visit these sites, and, by doing so, relive an important military event in the history of New Brunswick.

“New Brunswick’s story of the 104th Regiment was one of tremendous historical significance and we are happy to see the various ways members of the community are engaging in remembering and celebrating this great event 200 years later,” said Brian Macdonald, Legislative Secretary to the Premier responsible for intergovernmental affairs and military affairs and Chair of the Provincial War of 1812 Commemorative Committee.

Funding for this project has been secured with the support of the New Brunswick Museum in partnership with New Brunswick 1812 Commemoration Project and the St. John River Society.

New access road to promote trade, export at Saint John port being built

A new access road is being built off Route 1 near the Saint John Harbour Bridge to accommodate over-sized loads using the Port of Saint John.

"The new road will help to promote trade and economic development opportunities for the port and the province as a whole," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "I am pleased we have been able to partner with the Saint John Port Authority in bringing this initiative forward."

Construction of the 60-metre-long (200 feet) is road underway with completion expected by the end of December.

The work also includes the relocation of nearby infrastructure such as lighting, signage, storm sewer and the removal of median barrier sections.

When complete, eastbound over-sized loads will have smooth access directly to and from the port. Westbound over-sized loads currently reach the port by changing direction at the Lorneville Interchange.

Discussions about improving access to the Port of Saint John began with the recent reconfiguration of the Saint John Harbour Bridge and the removal of toll booths.

"We are fortunate to have an excellent relationship with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure," said Jim Quinn, president and chief executive officer of the Saint John Port Authority. "When we made the department aware of the logistical concerns our stakeholders had in moving over-sized loads through the new configuration at the Harbour Bridge, it was quick to come to the table with solutions that are now being put in place."

The transfer to the provincial government from the federal government of the administration and control of the section of Route 1 on which the bridge is located rendered the section of this highway fronting the Saint John Port Authority as Level 1 controlled access, in conformance with Regulation 94-97 of the Highway Act. The provincial government amended this regulation to reduce the level of controlled access designation to Level 4 from Level 1 on this section of highway to allow commercial access to the port.

The bridge is the main highway connection for international trade conducted at the Port of Saint John.

UNBSJ Looking for Placement Opportunities for January-April 2013 Co-Op Students!

The UNBSJ Business co-op program is currently looking for placement opportunities within this region and we would like to take this opportunity to tell you about our program and, more importantly, our students.

Our program has 27 ambitious business students available for employment from January – April 2013 who are conscientious, hard working, energetic and eager. The majority of our students are from New Brunswick and most hope to build a career here following graduation. For over nineteen years, organizations have been hiring UNB Saint John business co-op students to work in a variety of business related areas. Co-op students can assist employees with their day-to-day responsibilities, therefore allowing reallocation of professional staff to more complicated projects. Alternatively, co-op students may complete project work, cyclical work, and short-term work such as helping out while employees are on maternity or educational leave. The four-month work-terms also allow organizations to identify potential future full time employees.

We are currently posting co-op opportunities for the upcoming winter work-term. Please distribute this information to the managers and supervisors in your organization who may be interested in hiring a co-op student. Our recruitment process makes it easy for employers to find a great match for their organization.

If you would like further information about our program, please contact Stacey at 506-648-5741, cool@unbsj.ca or Erin at 506-648-5549, emackenz@unbsj.ca or call our toll free number 1-800-50-UNBSJ. We look forward to hearing from you.

Aquila shared the region with over 70,000 passengers this season!

With the last ship sailing last evening back to safe waters, Aquila says goodbye to another great cruise season.  At a “1980s Party” with its team of 60-plus guides and pierside staff, Aquila ended the 2012 season with a celebration that also recognized the company’s 30 years in business. This year marked a million guests on tours over the years for Aquila and the impact locally on small businesses from these passengers is incredible. Although some of the tour experiences take guests all the way to Hopewell Rocks, 80% of passengers are on tours of about two hours, leaving them lots of time to experience on their own. The cruise industry brings over $30 Million annually in economic spinoffs to the Saint John and Southern New Brunswick economy.
Aquila has gained a lot of experience over the last 30 years, and today is sharing that knowledge with tour operators and tour guides around the world.  Aquila's Center for Cruise Excellence was launched five years ago and today tour operators and hundreds of tour guides from places far and wide have taken advantage of Aquila’s knowledge, as well as their online International Certification and training program.
Aquila’s President, Beth Kelly Hatt, has travelled extensively over the last few months to destinations such as Guatemala, Aruba, Curaçao and Puerto Rico to share its knowledge and Best Practices with local tour operators and stakeholders in those ports. 2012 has been a tremendous year for Aquila, both locally and internationally.  Aquila’s certifications and designations have been endorsed by the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association and Aquila continues to be used as a model of excellence throughout the cruise industry around the world.
A Tour Operator in Saint John since 1982, Aquila has provided a wide range of experiences for its guests over the past 30 years – on local city tours for convention and event delegates, on group tours around the world – but the vast majority of their guests have been on shore excursions of Saint John and the Bay of Fundy from visiting cruise ships. With the growth of the cruise industry in Saint John, today Aquila’s business is solely focused on cruise, providing shore excursions in Saint John, as well as offering training and certification for Tour Guides and Tour Operators in the cruise industry in other parts of world. Through Aquila’s Center for Cruise Excellence, these offerings include training programs in the areas of Tour Operator Excellence, Tour Guide Excellence, and Port Excellence, all designed to help the key players in cruise destinations around the world achieve excellence in their ports, tours, guides and businesses.

Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal Grand Opening Week Events!

The Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal, which was put into operational use on September 5, will host grand opening events during the week of November 12, 2012.

The first event of the week occurs on Tuesday, November 13 when the funding partners in the cruise expansion project (Federal, Provincial officials and Port Saint John executives) will have a guided walk-through of the building and exchange plaques to commemorate the official opening of the building in a brief ceremony. (Media are invited for 9 am).

With appreciation to our federal and provincial funding partners, we are pleased to be able to welcome our stakeholder and business communities along with the wider public into our newest cruise terminal building during these events,” noted Jim Quinn President & CEO, Port Saint John. “Not only will Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal assist Port Saint John in accommodating cruise ships during multiple ship days, but it also provides the community a waterfront rental venue for events with views to the harbour and Bay of Fundy. We are especially pleased to have a roof-top patio which will be open seasonally during specified hours where members of the public can view harbour activity like never before.”

"I am pleased to take part in these events to celebrate the official opening of the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal. The investments in the Port of Saint John will not only enhance the experience of cruise passengers, but it will also attract additional vessels and economic opportunities to the Atlantic region as a whole," commented Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John. "This will drive tourism in the City of Saint John while creating opportunities in the Atlantic Canada cruise industry.”

On Wednesday, November 14 the Port Authority will host a grand opening reception for port stakeholders and the business community in the early evening. During this event a large work of art will be donated by Aquila Tours. The art work is the final product of a summer long project during which children from the Disney Magic, who took part in the “Whale of a Time” port adventure with Aquila Tours, painted ceramic tiles under direction of local mosaicist Sheryl Crowley (Fractured Art Mosaics). The individual tiles were then mounted by Ms. Crowley into a 4’ x 8’ art piece, depicting a Bay of Fundy North Atlantic Right Whale tail.

Finally, on Saturday, November 17, Port Saint John welcomes the public to an open house from 1-3 pm at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal with cookies and hot apple cider being served while quantities last. Tours of the building will be offered to all visitors on Saturday during this event.

New Brunswick Community Collete E-Building Officially Opens

The $26-million E-Building at the New Brunswick Community College, Saint John campus, officially opened.
"I am pleased to see the New Brunswick Community College offering students a quality learning experience in a world-class facility,” said Culture, Tourism and Healthy Living Minister Trevor Holder. “Infrastructure improvements are essential to the long-term success of our New Brunswick post-secondary institutions. Modern facilities such as this attract students, foster innovative ideas and retain leadership talent in our province."

Holder was speaking on behalf of the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.

"Our government has invested in innovation and knowledge infrastructure to set the foundation for economic prosperity," said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. "This project not only created jobs for people in our community but also provided the infrastructure that will benefit the New Brunswick Community College for years to come."

The 7,492-square-metre (83,250-square-foot) building, a focal point on the campus, is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver-rating standards. The “E” in E-Building refers to energy, environment and engineering technologies.

"This is another example of the New Brunswick Community College accelerating on its journey as a contemporary college," said Marilyn Luscombe, president and chief executive officer of the community college. "The new E-Building will provide our students with interactive spaces for their various formal and informal learning experiences. We are very appreciative of both governments' continued investment in the New Brunswick Community College. This will enable us to continue to prepare the workforce of tomorrow and engage citizens who will benefit their communities for years to come."

Cheryl M.G. Robertson, board chair of the community college, echoed Luscombe's comments, adding that the college will soon launch its new five-year strategic plan.

"Now is time to invest in the New Brunswick Community College,” said Robertson. “The college has a strong vision in place and is steaming ahead with its commitment to contribute to social and economic prosperity in New Brunswick."

The state-of-the-art building, located on Grandview Avenue, welcomed students and staff in early September. It showcases advanced green-energy systems, and it will also serve as teaching tools for energy, environment, and engineering technology students.

The provincial government invested $23.5 million in the project, while the federal government, through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program administered by Industry Canada contributed $2.5 million.

The New Brunswick Community College is committed to encouraging, engaging and inspiring its learners to be successful and innovative citizens. Across six locations, the community college offers more than 90 regular programs as well as apprenticeship and continuing education opportunities.

In Addition, other aircraft will be on-site Monday for Media, including Canadian aircraft racer, Pete McLeod, of the Red Bull racing team in an Edge 540, and Dan Dempsey with the Hawk One Sabre.F-86.

Yellow Wings pilots tell the story of the BCATP and how ordinary Canadians from coast to coast came together in what became known as the “Aerodrome of Democracy” to train hundreds of thousands of aviators from Canada, the British Commonwealth and the U.S., in the effort to win the War. One of the lasting legacies of the BCATP was the construction of dozens of Canadian airports across Canada.

The Yellow Wings aircraft are part of the Mike Potter Collection of Vintage Wings of Canada. They include the North American Harvard, deHavilland Tiger Moth, Fleet Finch and the Fairchild Cornell.

To find out more about the aircraft and the heroes to which they are dedicated, or to download high-resolution photos, visit www.yellowwings.ca.

Paramount Film Release

For Immediate Release
Saint John, New Brunswick,
August 14, 2012

The Paramount is a documentary about a community cinema in danger of demolition. The film follows a community activist as he tries to raise support for a new vision to save the Paramount Theatre in Saint John New Brunswick.
New Brunswick television production company Hemmings House Pictures is pleased to announce the broadcast premiere of The Paramount. The documentary will air on CBC television and the Documentary Channel.
The Paramount Theatre has sat vacant and decayed at the edge of Saint John’s King’s Square for almost a decade. The owner of the building has been planning its demolition. Mike McDonald is a lifetime Saint John resident who feels that if the building is torn down it will be devastating for the core of the city’s Uptown arts and cultural communities. This is a viewpoint that has caused mixed reactions in the community. The Paramount follows McDonald over a period of a few months as he tries to gain support and defend his vision.
Mike McDonald travels to other communities to learn about cultural infrastructures, heritage buildings, urban design, and the history of motion pictures. He travels to Bangor ME, Chicago IL, Los Angeles CA, and Ottawa ON, for a fact finding mission that he hopes will energize the community for one last fight to raise enough money to purchase, revitalize, and reopen the Paramount Theatre as 2nd run cinema and performing arts venue.
Producer and director Greg Hemmings feels that this is an important story to tell the world. “This is not a story about a small decaying theatre in a small city on the East Coast of Canada. This is a story of universal values that people around the world can relate to. I hope that this film will encourage people to look at their own communities in a different way, and appreciate the treasures that they have before they loose them. This is not a film to encourage people to save old buildings, but to appreciate, value and not take them for granted.”
Local historian Harold Wright sees this story as a reminder of the rich history Saint John had in the entertainment business over the years. “Tearing a building like the Paramount Theatre down is not just an architectural loss, it is also the destruction of an icon that represented an era where Saint John was a thriving port city with a lot going on. Rebuilding the Theatre would represent a move back in the direction of a prosperous city. Hemmings House did a great job capturing all sides of this story and it will be a great film to share to the rest of the country and beyond.”
The first broadcast of The Paramount will be exclusively aired on CBC Atlantic, Saturday August 25th at 8pm.

Saint John Industrial Parks - Park Views

Barge Terminal Update

July 2012

In Spring 2012, GEMTEC was hired to perform the design, permitting and engineering for a barge load out facility at the Spruce Lake Industrial Park in the Lorneville Cove. Work has begun with a pre EIA project screening involving Federal and Provincial regulators, geotechnical investigations, site survey work as well as several stakeholder meetings to date. A preliminary design for stakeholder review is expected as soon as August 2012. SJIP GM Brian Irving noted, "The environmental and site work has been done very diligently and the stakeholder engagement work so far has brought great information and insights into the facility design."
The project is aiming to fill a gap with a strategic investment. GM Irving said, "There is currently a lot of activity and growth in the modular fabrication industry. Mega projects are being built in areas which do not have the labor force requirements to perform the construction; as such, many of the components are being brought in from around the world. Increased quality is one attraction to this construction trend; however, the timelier build out factor is critical as the carrying costs of the mega projects are staggering."  Saint John has several operators who could secure contracts for oversize components for a variety of mega projects: Vale Inco, refurbishments of hundreds of mills and plants along the eastern seaboard, and the opening up of the Arctic, to name a few.
If the project is successful in its realization, the Spruce Lake Barge facility will drive a lot of positive activity in the park. There is currently no barge export facility in southern New Brunswick; securing one would give the park a competitive advantage and unique offering, demand for land will increase significantly, there will be a correlating increase in real property tax revenues to the City and Province, as well as the associated jobs from the fabrication and load out of oversize modular units. SJIP GM Irving added, "This infrastructure investment puts Saint John and the region on good footing going forward. The value of the exports are massive, the years of labor required to fulfill many of the contracts available is astounding. We have skilled tradesmen, fabrication operators with expertise and capacity -- they simply need to get their products to market."
Upcoming project steps include: a formal EIA project registration, detailed design renderings, further regulator and stakeholder discussions. GM Irving noted, "We are very pleased with respect to how this project has advanced over the past 90 days. We are continuing to work with the community and our consultants to find a way to get this important project realized!"

Staff News From The Wright Agency

Colin Timm, one of our long term creative partners, has agreed to join The Wright Agency in Saint John as full time Senior Art Director.
Colin is a classically trained Art Director with over 25 years of advertising experience. He has worked as an Art Director in Johannesburg, South Africa for some of the world’s largest and most prestigious advertising agencies: J Walter Thompson, BBDO, and Saatchi & Saatchi, to name a few. In 1998, he was transferred to Saatchi & Saatchi Canada and eventually settled in Halifax where he was employed by CCL and later Cossette Atlantic.
During his career, Colin has worked on accounts such as British Airways, Toyota, Proctor & Gamble, Prince Edward Island Tourism and the Government of Nova Scotia. He is very familiar with our client base, having already made creative contributions to Saputo, New Brunswick Securities Commission, NB Dental, Saint John Mill Rats, Alcool NB Liquor and many others.
Along the way he has picked up numerous Advertising Awards, which include Clio, New York Festival, London International, Mobius and Ice. However he, like we, firmly believes that the increase, success and growth of the client’s product and business are of paramount importance. Awards are nice for the ego, but mean little if the client’s objectives aren’t met.
In his new role, Colin will become an even greater asset to our clients and our agency as he continues to raise the standard of our creative output and aids us in fulfilling our growth initiative.
Please say hello to Colin at Colin@TheWrightAgency.ca or 672-6663

A New Menu for Tourism

June 26, 2012 - Moncton (N.B.) Page Content – For years, traditional maritime charm and rugged beauty have drawn a bounty of visitors to Atlantic Canada’s shores. But these days, an evolution in all things gastronomic is calling global food-minded travelers looking for new action (and brew!) a-brewing down home …
As North America’s only mention in Lonely Planet’s top 10 regions to visit in 2012, Canada’s East Coast has officially been singled out for its unique appeal to gastronomes looking to experience everything from local potato vodka distilleries, organic farm wineries, and wharf-side oyster cafés, to mushroom foraging tours and farmstead cheese-making classes.
Good news for the region’s food and beverage producers who, in the context of a $4 billion regional tourism industry, have been busy coordinating their efforts to turn their businesses — and communities — into key destinations for visitors looking for a unique “taste” of local life.

Canadians Go Wireless in Increasing Numbers Mobile Communications from Business are Welcome, study says

SAINT JOHN, New Brunswick (June 25, 2012) – More Canadians than ever are going mobile in the evolving landscape of wireless communication. And that, one agency says, provides enormous opportunity for businesses big or small.
According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, nearly 75 percent of Canadians—a whopping 26 million—have a mobile phone. Of those mobile phone owners, 48 percent own a Smartphone. Those Smartphone users aren’t just talking—they’re texting, searching, emailing, downloading and participating in social networks. Increasing numbers use their phone to research products and services, and plan to leverage the technology to power-up their purchasing.
“Of the millions of Canadians who own Smartphones, 79 percent say they never leave home without it,” says Sara MacQueen of Big Fish Media, a Canadian Mobile Marketing Agency. “That’s a lot of customers on the move—and we’re finding they’re increasingly open to using their phone to connect with their favorite companies and brands.”
That spells opportunity for business since Canadians aren’t shy about connecting through mobile technology. Up to 50 percent of Smartphone owners say they are interested in using their phone for loyalty programs, gift cards and coupons. Nearly half, too, say they would welcome location-based coupons from retailers delivered through their Smartphone.
“Research across the board is showing us that today’s consumers are making decisions based on the information they receive through their mobile device,” says MacQueen. “They’re reading reviews, comparing prices and searching for coupons from the palm of their hand. It makes sense to implement a mobile-focused marketing strategy.”
